A RETREAT FOR THE BODY AND SOUL

There is no shortage of walled, hilltop villages capping the “prime colline” sweeping up from the Tuscan coast. Each with its own character, history, local cuisine and even dialect. One such medieval village, Montescudaio, in the “Upper Maremma”, finds its perch just between renowned wine destination Bolgheri and the larger, seaside town of Cecina.

Kate & Ulrich Caspar, Berlin-based film producers and architects, and transplants to the region over 10 years ago, have recently but their unique, disciplined stamp in the historic village with a hospitality project, lo scudaio, that stems from the restoration of the antique Palazzo Marchionneschi. The palazzo has been reinterpreted in respect of its history and architecture with contemporary concepts. Natural and precious materials, warm earthy colors, details of elegance and simplicity come together in a comfortable, familiar and sustainable style of hospitality.

On display is a wonderful “opposites attract” approach to the interior design. The austere, almost monastic, furnishings sitting within a rustic, Tuscan framework, under heavy oak ceiling beams and atop the rich terrazzo flooring made in the traditional method, is just pitch perfect for today’s traveller who seeks new experiences. Too much of one or the other would fall flat. Or worse, be rendered cliche in an “under the Tuscan sun” type of way. And then there is the physical transition from the older structure to the early 20th century building where original decorative motifs, tile work and pastel colors adorn the rooms. The buildings are conjoined by a literal knock-through and transitional staircase left as a kind of time marker between centuries!

The scope of lo scudaio is to shine with its natural beauty, to connect the values of the past with contemporary concepts of hospitality. A calming invitation for individuals or groups is found in one of the scudaio’s common spaces that doubles as a large yoga studio with garden views. Or, claim a moment of relax under the grand columns and vaulted ceilings of the earthen-colored lounge area with an Italian aperitivo as the world passes by.

Kate and Ulrich wanted to maintain an identity made up of transitions between eras, styles and cultures, but also of stories and people. The intent is to create new synergies, exchange of ideas and knowledge of the values of the area, its resources and inhabitants. A responsible choice, knowing that every action can be a step toward a more sustainable way of living.

“lo scudaio is a place to share ideas, cultivate interest in culture and art, for a simple and precious lifestyle. A place where you can have new experiences, or simply enjoy your time, rediscovering the beauty in small things, nature, good food and the warmth of people.”

The curated renovation of lo scudaio illustrates not only Kate and Ulrich’s respect of materials, historic detail and balance in design but their love for their adopted home in Tuscany, as well.
